invention of the poop-hardening spray?

For a project in my gifted class at school, we either have to think up an invention, or improve an already existing one. I came up with the brilliant idea of the poop-hardening spray. Good for pets with stooly feces. (I have 9 dogs, it's a problem for me) I was just thinking, how am I going to harden poop? I did my research and found out that in super glue, the main active ingrediant is cyanoacrylate, which when combined to water, makes a type of super-adhesive, enough so that a square inch can support a whole ton. So I was thinking of using that as my main ingrediant in the spray. Any thoughts? I cant think of another thing that could instantly and thoroughly freeze the feces for easy pick-up. I know this is a seemingly disgusting project, but honestly, if I had see this in stores, I would buy it in an instant

Hmmm....you're obviously using your imagination, and have put some thought into this, so at the risk of "raining on your parade" I think you need to think about the reality of your idea as you've stated it.....

As you've pointed out cyanoacrylate does in fact react in the presence of water to make a very strong polymer, and as you point out there is a commercial application of this reaction that we all call superglue. Now let's extend that into your idea.

If you could make an aerosol of cyanoacrylate, that you sprayed your dogs' loose stool, what would really happen? (Remember, that the polymerization of cyanoacrylate is pretty fast, think about how fast super glue "dries".)

What's likely to happen is that the cyanoacrylate will likely polymerize on the surface. This will form, as someone has already pointed out, a cocoon over the top of the stool without actually penetrating it or hardening it. When you go to pick the thing up, you're going to actually be picking up the cocoon which probably won't be tightly bound to the stool. The result is likely to be messy.

The second thing that I think you need to think about some more is the idea of an aerosol. Put simply, they're messy delivery systems. Think about spray paint. If you just pick up a can and spray it, you get a pattern were there's alot of paint in the middle and that gets more diffuse towards the edges. What this means is that it's a little difficult to put the paint in a very precise place; you always get a little bit of overspray.

If you extend that into a cyanoacrylate spray, you'd be able to put the cyanoacrylate on the stool, but you'd invariably have some overspray. This means that the cocoon you'd be forming would extend beyond the stool. Depending on the surface that the stool was on, you might actually glue it down. This wouldn't be good.

Lastly, cyanoacrylate is in and of itself a fairly dangerous chemical. (It's somewhat toxic and it presents all kinds of ways for people to glue parts of themselves to each other or to other objects.)

Ok, those are the problems. Now what are the solutions? None of those problems are deal killers, they just need some additional creative thinking. Places you might want to go are:

1. Look for a polymerization reaction that isn't quite so "aggressive", i.e., something that doesn't happen quite as fast and that doesn't make such a strong polymer. This will give the monomer a chance to penetrate before it really starts to polymerize. While the end product might not be quite as "structural", you just want to make the stool easy to pick up, not turn it into a structurally strong object.

2. You might want to consider a different delivery system. However, using a less aggressive polymer might make the "glue it down" problem less of an issue.

3. The only way to deal with the chemical danger problem is to find a different chemical. Places you might look are:

* Finding out what makes the cyanoacrylate polymer less strong.
* Finding out what makes the cyanoacrylate polymerization reaction go more slowly.
* Look at the general composition of feces and see if there's something simple you could use to make a chemical or physical change in those materials that would solidify or at least gel them up. The bodies of animals do this by removing water; you'll probably need a different technique.
