String Finger

Modern guitar players are faced with a different set of problems than their classical guitar playing counterparts. When a classical guitarist plays a piece of music they are performing from written music ... someone else's ideas frozen in time and placed on paper.

This places the classical guitarist in an safe place, if someone where to criticize their playing the guitarist could safely lay the blame on the composer ... after all they wrote it!

In contrast today's guitar player has to face possible criticism of both their own original ideas as well as the way they technically perform their music. It's no good trying to blame Bach, Mozart or Beethoven ... it's Your Own music, so this time it's personal.

Here's what you don't want to happen ...

1. You don't want any impediments in your technique ... when it comes to performing you want 100% reliable technique.

2. You don't want to be thinking about theoretical [data] information, you have to "own" that stuff ... everything has to be on autopilot; you need to be concentrating on and reacting to the music, musicians and audience.

3. You don't want your ideas to get stuck at your wrist, you need to be able to project your ideas through your instrument to the listener effortlessly.

What to do instead ...

The often quoted "practice makes perfect" phrase is only partly true; it's true that practice does make perfect ... You Can get really good at practicing mistakes if you are not careful!

If you want to be successful at playing the guitar we need to make an important distinction ... "PERFECT practice makes perfect".

Without question one of the major musical roadblocks to successful performance is poor Left Hand co-ordination; in particular the third and four fingers.

Here's a really neat exercise to get these two lazy fingers working for you.

Step 1: start with your third finger behind the third fret, first string and your four finger behind the fourth fret, second string.

Important: make certain both fingers come down on the strings simultaneously, not two separate movements.

Step 2: flip your fingers around the other way so you will have; your third finger behind the third fret on the second string and your fourth finger behind the fourth fret, first string.

Step 3: this time we're going back to our original shape only skipping the second string.

Third finger behind the third fret on the first string; fourth finger behind the fourth fret, third string.

Step 4: time to flip our shape again, third finger behind the third fret third string and fourth finger behind the fourth fret first string.

Keep doing this exercise gradually widening the string gap until you can reach right over to the sixth string.

Tip: practice s-l-o-w-l-y; always remember speed is a by product of accuracy.

Bonus tip: use your Right Hand fingers for this exercise not a pick, strive for equal balance of the two notes ... we want them to blend.

This exercise is not intended to sound musical, it's an intensive isometric exercise designed to increase your left hand strength and co-ordination so you can play your music effortlessly.

I invite you to use these tips and tools when you play the guitar.

And now I'd like to invite you to get free access to my "How To Remember 1,000 Songs" eCourse. You can download the course for free at:

From Mike Hayes - The Guitar Coaching Guy & the Express Guitar System

what is the difference btwn a 4th finger violin string, and an open on the next string?

like 4th d/ open a or 4th a/ open e

The pitch is the same but the timbre (sound quality) is different; the open string is brighter, but you can vibrato with the 4th finger.

Bowstring Bow

How often should I wax my bowstring?

I'm just curious. Went firing yesterday, today, and likely tomorrow. I'm just wondering how ofter I should wax the bowstring to prevent fraying. The last thing I need is to replace the string in the middle of firing.

I shoot with a Martin Compound Bow. Past couple of days has been at least one hundred shots a day.

Depending on the temperature and how much you shoot you should wax your string at least once every week or every 2 weeks. If you do alot of shooting on really hot days you should wax your string when you are done shooting. The heat will warm the wax and when you shoot it will be forced from the fibers on every shot. Make sure you wipe off any excess wax for it collects dirt and makes your strings look dirty and where your string and cable goes thru the Cable Slide it will be very abrasive.

What else can the Atom Smasher do?

Can someone explain to me what good does the atom smasher has for mankind? I know it could help some curious mind to uncover the mysteries of the universe, like the "big bang" or the gravitational forces of the black hole.. but isn't all these discoveries too elusive and useless to mankind? So what if we know how the universe was created or how a black hole can suck up thousands of planets and bend the ray of lights? Are there any better discoveries line up in this massive multi billion dollar LHC project? In a more practical way I hope? I thought the discovery of compact disc has much better contribution than smashing 2 protons at the speed of light..lol. Forgive me if I haven't been reading much, I have not indeed.

We have internet way before LHC was build dumb duck.

I watched the live web-cast at CERN while they were powering up the machine (roughly 7 hours of it).
Aside from possibly answering the age old question of why we are here (big enough in itself), they explained that the LHC has many benefits for mankind.

Learning about subatomic particles, how they work and how we can manipulate them will vastly increase our knowledge of the world around us, enabling for new technologies in just about everything You Can think of: computers, engineering, space travel, even the medical field.

Most noteworthy was that the LHC will be heavily influential in the research and treatment of diseases, cancer in particular. I think that is a massive benefit, don't you?

Professor Brian Cox at CERN explains it a lot better than me:

Question: What advantages (besides increase in knowledge) do you expect to obtain from this?

Answer:
"Experiment is the basis of the scientific method, without which there would be no modern world as we know it...

... without these experimental discoveries, and the subsequent deepening of our understanding of the Universe, there would be no electronics, no silicon chips or transistors, no medical imaging technology, no nuclear power stations, no X-rays or chemotherapy treatments for cancer...

... What this should teach us is two things. First, it is virtually impossible to deepen our understanding of Nature without experiments. Second, understanding Nature has never been a bad idea - indeed without the pioneers of the past century, our civilisation would be immeasurably poorer.

... I do not know what the continuation of this long and illustrious quest will lead to, but I would be extremely surprised if a writer called upon to defend scientific enquiry at the turn of the 22nd Century does not point to the LHC as the foundation of a hundred new technologies, each considered essential to our quality of life."

You can read the whole article here where he gives insight into the possibilities of the LHC:

All told, September 10th, 2008 could prove to be a very instrumental and historic day. Who knows what future technologies we will have the LHC and the people at CERN to thank for.

EDIT:
The world wide web was actually invented at CERN, albeit long before the LHC.

Traditional Flemish Bow
Traditional Flemish Bow

Part eight. Brilliant colours, brilliant execution, brilliant age - the glory of the Renaissance

If I am honest, the real reason I was so underwhelmed by the Lloyd Webber extravaganza was that, tucked away upstairs, there was an absolute jewel of an exhibition that fair took my breath away. I was not alone in that respect because, away from the pomp and ceremony elsewhere in the building, time seemed to stand still as I, and a smattering of others, appreciated a display of exquisite Flemish illuminated manuscripts. The most remarkable aspect of these manuscripts was that they were produced over 500 years ago. Inscribed and coloured by hand with infinite care, they possessed a freshness no painting can match. Their secure bindings ensured that they have remained free from the vicissitudes of light that so often tarnish canvas and panel. Moreover, they perfectly married art and literature, while inviting their audience to renew their vows with each. These manuscripts were highly coveted and one must remember that this region was at the epicentre of European trade and culture during the period. The rise in Netherlandish painting very much mirrored that of the Italian Renaissance and we can see the extent of this influence through these illuminated manuscripts. We can also determine how tastes were shaped in the decades ahead of the Reformation through the prism of both clerical and secular life. Their value, in every respect, is inestimable.

Having said that, it would be a mistake to think that these delicate and precious works of art were only produced on commission. It is certainly true that by 1450 royal patronage, especially from the Burgundian court, acted as a catalyst to innumerable jobbing artists. As the wealth of the Low Countries grew, so did the desire for conspicuous consumption and display. This was a very commercial and competitive environment and illuminators needed to be sensitive to market forces and, indeed, changing fashion. Nonetheless, the fact that such a high proportion ended up in British collections emphasises their wide appeal. Other contemporary admirers were drawn from Italy, Spain, Portugal, France and Germany but the close dynastic links between England and Flanders during the reign of Edward IV allowed the king to acquire a significant number of items.

Naturally, a series of masters emerged who in turn ran workshops employing many pupils. This encouraged a much greater degree of experimentation whereby traditional, two dimensional forms of decoration were supplanted by strew flower borders. The hallmark of these borders was the depiction of flowers, insects and fruit set against imitation gold leaf. These might also include miniature versions of the main image or text to present the illusion of continuous illumination. Although many masters cannot be accurately identified today, their legacy has been preserved for posterity. We can examine, for example, the linkage between Gothic revivalists and the Arts and Crafts movement with these pioneering artists. Indeed, if we consider the corpus of William Morris, one of the pillars of the Lloyd Webber show, we can observe the impact of the medieval tradition in his designs and typographica. Quite where you would place Thomas Kinkade in this firmament is another matter entirely. Compared with a virtuoso illuminator such as Simon Bening, unarguably the master among all masters in the first half of the sixteenth century, he is not much better than a journeyman artist. Technically good he may be but as an innovator he's dead in the water.
