Is it OK to mix 10W-30 and 20W-50 in the same brand and type of Oil?

I ask because they dont make a 10W-40 and the mix would be the best for my engine. Im wondering if there is any downside, however it is the same Maker and Type of Oil i want to mix.

oil ratings make up a specification on how the oil is supposed to perform under certain conditions. The 1st number the weight is how thin the oil is at certain temperatures and a 5 ow 0 rating is reccomended for extrememly cold climates. the 2nd number is how well the engine is lubricated at operating temperature. High performance cars usually need a 50 or 60 oil to lubricate sufficiently at higher temperatures because they exceed the range that 40 oil is effective at.

mixing the 2 oils in theory would make a 15w40 a heavy oil which will make your car probably feel more sluggish and wont necessarily blend to make the desire 40 specification.

I would reccomend looking for a different oil. The 10w30 may not perform at your engines operating temperature and the 20w may not give much protection when the engine is cold. mixing may not give the desired effect. 10w40 is probably the most common oil sold, so someone will do a decent brand at this spec. Mobil 1 oil i have always found to be effective
